There can be no single version of ‘black history’. Its meaning differs from person to person, from place to place and from era to era - depending on such factors as school curriculums, media clichés and stereotypes, access to historical evidence, collective traditions, patterns of mobility, and experiences of gender and class. The Birmingham Research Institute for History and Cultures (BRIHC) presents a roundtable discussion to grapple with the meanings of 'black history' in Britain and beyond.
