This talk titled "Making Social Responsibility the Main Course: Social change and good business in the restaurant world" was given by Iqbal Wahhab, OBE, FRSA (Founder of Roast and The Cinnamon Club) on 2 December 2015 as part of the SOAS Food Studies Centre lecture series. In this lecture, restaurateur and social campaigner Iqbal Wahhab will speak about the importance customers, employees and wider stakeholders place on the social impact of restaurants. The Bangladesh-born founder of The Cinnamon Club and Roast will describe his involvement in food start-ups, his engagement with ex-offenders, and his support for a project to enable unemployed women to come off benefits and into work in the catering industry. These initiatives have not only empowered such groups but also redressed skills shortages, improved employee retention and attracted new customers who share the values of a company that is undertaking such initiatives. In support of his argument that social responsibility should no longer be a side dish but rather the main course, Wahhab will highlight the work of other restaurants and organisations that have developed viable businesses around core values emphasising similar forms of social engagement.
