Revere or Remove? The Battle Over Statues, Heritage and H...
Description: “These are the history wars we are having...Statues have become lightning rods for a struggle we are going to have to have about our history.” – David Olusoga, historian and one of the presenters of the BBC’s Civilisations series.
Statues and memorials to famous figures of the past adorn our towns and cities. But what should be done when some of these figures have come to be seen by many people as controversial symbols of oppression and discrimination?
In Britain, the Rhodes Must Fall campaign hit the headlines when it demanded the removal of the statue of Cecil Rhodes from Oxford’s Oriel College, of which he was a leading benefactor, because of his colonialism. In the US, violent protests in Charlottesville were sparked by a decision to remove from a park a statue of Robert E. Lee, a Confederate general in the American Civil War, because of the association of the Confederacy with slavery.
Passions run high on both sides. Are those calling for the removal of controversial statues seeking to right an historical injustice or are they trying to erase history? And are those who object to removing memorials defending the indefensible or are they conserving historical reality, however unpalatable that may be?
To discuss these emotive questions and examine the broader cultural conflicts which lie behind them, Intelligence Squared are joining forces with Historic England and bringing together a stellar panel including historians David Olusoga and Peter Frankopan, the journalist and author Afua Hirsch and the cultural commentator Tiffany Jenkins.

Leading and leaving the London gang world | Karl Lokko
Description: Made 2015:
Karl Lokko talks about the importance of community and his transition from a gang member to a community leader, creating a therapeutic rehabilitation center for youth.
Karl is a 25 year old former gang leader who has now turned his life around. He has managed to harness his life experiences which has propelled and uniquely situated him as an activist/influencer within the U.K. Karl is a gifted orator with an ability to connect with people on a human level, granting him undoubtedly the role of a bridge, bridging worlds and uniting community. Karl Lokko’s oratory capacity came into the light through the unfortunate and unsettling 2011 riots, where he was called upon to speak and express the hard to articulate feelings of the community in which he lives in.
Karl Lokko is an ambassador for Kids Company, a ‘Big Changer’ and consultant for Big Change, a tireless community worker and campaigner working to reform gang culture in the U.K, currently doing the ground work to establish this country’s first therapeutic community gang rehabilitation centre whilst at the same time affecting policy around the issue.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.

Sitarist Ravi Shankar's Aman Manch (National Peace Forum)
Description: Amazing performance of Ravi Shankar's - Aman Manch by daughter of Ravi Shankar.
In Girona, Anoushka Shankar presented the melodies of her album Traveller as a world premiere. The project, which she calls Raga Flamenco Journey, originated from a specific idea: the desire to retrace the thousand-year-old bond between Indian and Spanish musical traditions.
Strongly inspired by Indian folk music, Anoushka Shankar learned how to play with her father, the legendary sitarist Ravi Shankar. Her work as a composer is the perpetual exploration of the fertile ground between Indian music and a variety of genres including electronica, jazz, flamenco and Western classical music.
Anoushka perform on Ek Taal which is a 12 beat cycle a composition by her father in a Raga which is also created by him. Its a very beautiful raga called the Aman Munch

British & - British and Black (Black lives in Britain)
Description: Racism is a universal problem in our modern world, found in various parts of the world and in different societies, although in different forms and to varying degrees. Combating racism, as a cherished universal goal, calls for a common, directed effort on a global scale.
In this episode of British & Black, Nargess goes to Birmingham to meet with Kingsley Burrel’s sister, and talk to her about the circumstances of her brother’s death. Kingsley was taken into custody in March 2011 under the Mental Health Act by West Midlands Police. Having been beaten and badly mistreated while in detention, the 29-year-old young man died in a hospital four days later. Nargess also attends a rally of a group of mostly black citizens protesting against injustice.
In another part of the episode, Nargess visits the Black Cultural Archives and talks to the director, who shows her the Archive and informs her of its history. She then goes to Paddington Arts Center, where Ansel Wong takes her on a tour of the various parts of the Center. In the course of the tour, Wong describes, in detail, how they get ready for the annual carnival.

Asian Provocateur Episode 4
Description: Cousin Krishna
Comedian Romesh Ranganathan considers himself British through and through. He grew up in Horsham, doesn't speak a word of Tamil, doesn't know any of his relatives, has no idea about his cultural heritage and has almost zero desire to go to Sri Lanka. Like thousands of other British children of immigrants, he knows very little about the land where his parents came from. As his mother Shanthi says - he's a coconut. Sri Lankan on the outside, but British on the inside.
Now Shanthi wants her son to connect to his roots - so she's decided to change all that by sending Romesh on an odyssey around the motherland. Not that he's that happy about it.
Shanthi wants Romesh to explore what his life could have been if he'd grown up in Sri Lanka, and in particular what career path he could have taken. To complicate matters, Romesh must also look after his 12-year-old cousin Krishna, who is actually the more grown-up of the two. Following a dangerous attempt at becoming a tuk-tuk driver on the streets of Jaffna, he finds out that working in a busy tourist hotel with his young cousin is an equally stressful experience. To make up for it, Romesh arranges for Krishna to do some Kandyan dancing, which becomes much more public than he anticipated.
