Bullied, attacked and racially-abused more than fifty times in eight weeks. That's the experience of two British Asian reporters posing as a couple and living undercover on a housing estate in Britain during summer 2009. In a shocking insight into race hate and anti-social behaviour in our neighbourhoods, Tamanna Rahman was pelted with glass and stones and threatened with a brick during an attempted mugging by an 11-year-old boy. Her "husband," Amil Khan, was punched in the head. Yet the head of the government's equality watchdog has said that having a neighbour of a different ethnic background isn't an issue any more. Panorama investigates the truth about racism and anti-social behaviour in Britain today. Contains racially offensive language. First Broadcast October 2009.

After Windrush - Paulette Wilson's visit to Jamaica, 50 y...
Description: Produced by The Guardian
A letter from the British government classifying Paulette Wilson as an illegal immigrant shook her sense of identity and belonging. ‘Hostile environment’ policies years in the making meant that Wilson and other victims of the Windrush scandal had their right to residency in the UK called into question. She had been detained for a week pending imminent deportation though she had done nothing wrong. It was devastating, but luckily she was released before she was deported. Here we follow Wilson as she returns to Jamaica for the first time in 50 years, trying to make sense of her place in the world and rebuild a sense of security and belonging.

The stories of the Windrush veterans
Description: Channel 4 News
The personal stories of the Windrush generation - British people from the West Indies who came here to live, often before their islands became independent states - have shocked the world. They have worked and lived in the UK for decades, but some are now finding that their status in this country, as citizens, is being questioned and doubted. In one community centre in Peterborough, England, every Friday a group of elderly British West Indians, many of whom served in Britain's armed forces and even fought in wars for this country, gather for lunch and for company. They told us what their lives here mean to them and how they feel about their country.

Gold, Silver & Slaves (Britain's Slave Trade Documentary
Description: Gold, Silver & Slaves looks at how the business of slavery was a case of slave-trading by complicit Africans, fuelled by the greed of African kings.
This is the untold story of the greatest slaving nation in history. Up till now, Britain’s place in the history of slavery has been as the country that abolished the international slave trade.
Britain’s Slave Trade reveals the shameful truth behind this liberal facade, showing how the economic, social and cultural life of Britain would have been unrecognisable without slavery. Britain’s Slave Trade explains how a middling European power transformed itself into the ruler of the waves, tracing the impact this had on the British way of life and taking in the Industrial Revolution, the beginnings of Empire and the birth of modern racism along the way. It also unearths startling evidence showing how many families that think of themselves as ‘pure’ English stock are in fact descended from slave ancestors.

To change the world, change your illusions | Minna Salami...
Description: This talk was given at a Brixton, London TEDx event in October 2014 and produced independently of the TED Conferences.
In this talk, Minna Salami shares images of women from around the world, highlighting how out of touch the stereotypes are from reality. She tells powerful stories of her diverse grandmothers whose lives have shaped hers and of how images of African women in the West do not represent the experiences of her own friends and family. And how, very simply, African women like the same things as women everywhere.
Minna Salami writes, speaks and advocates on a broad range of Africa, Diaspora and feminist issues. She writes the award-winning African feminist blog, MsAfropolitan, and is a member of the Duke University’s Global Educator Network as well as the Guardian’s (UK) Africa Network.
