After Windrush - Paulette Wilson's visit to Jamaica, 50 y...
Description: Produced by The Guardian
A letter from the British government classifying Paulette Wilson as an illegal immigrant shook her sense of identity and belonging. ‘Hostile environment’ policies years in the making meant that Wilson and other victims of the Windrush scandal had their right to residency in the UK called into question. She had been detained for a week pending imminent deportation though she had done nothing wrong. It was devastating, but luckily she was released before she was deported. Here we follow Wilson as she returns to Jamaica for the first time in 50 years, trying to make sense of her place in the world and rebuild a sense of security and belonging.

Gold, Silver & Slaves (Britain's Slave Trade Documentary
Description: Gold, Silver & Slaves looks at how the business of slavery was a case of slave-trading by complicit Africans, fuelled by the greed of African kings.
This is the untold story of the greatest slaving nation in history. Up till now, Britain’s place in the history of slavery has been as the country that abolished the international slave trade.
Britain’s Slave Trade reveals the shameful truth behind this liberal facade, showing how the economic, social and cultural life of Britain would have been unrecognisable without slavery. Britain’s Slave Trade explains how a middling European power transformed itself into the ruler of the waves, tracing the impact this had on the British way of life and taking in the Industrial Revolution, the beginnings of Empire and the birth of modern racism along the way. It also unearths startling evidence showing how many families that think of themselves as ‘pure’ English stock are in fact descended from slave ancestors.

Akala Interview for Vlad TV
Description: U.K. artist Akala stopped by the Vlad Couch to discuss a plethora of topics surrounding the history of the impact of slavery throughout the world, Black culture, hip hop's influence across the world, and what it means to be mixed-race in today's society.
Akala starts the conversation discussing the difference between racism in America versus the United Kingdom. Then delves into police brutality and the gun laws in Britain. Then the rapper gives a brief history lesson on Britain's involvement in the slave trade, and how they've maintained a very "white" history. Akala explained there is nowhere in the U.K where there are only Black people. "You know if you go to the south side of the Chicago, or you go to certain parts of the Bronx, I've visited family up there, and literally everyone [was Black.]"
In breaking down the presence of hip-hop in the UK, Akala talks about his Black Shakespeare theory, and how he believes that centuries from now, someone like Nas or Lauryn Hill will be the Shakespeare of their time. He also explains why he feels Damian Marley out-rapped Nas on 'Distant Relatives,' after explaining why as a Black man he chooses not to use the N-word anymore.

Black is the New Black -Episode.4
Description: Documentary series celebrating Britain's black community. Episode one explores both arriving and growing up in Britain through intimate interviews with prominent black Britons. Exceptional figures from politics, business, sport, culture, religion and science share their insights into being black and British today, how they got where they are and their thoughts on what the future holds. The first episode is about arriving and growing up in Britain. A cast of distinguished black Britons including Naomi Campbell, Sir Trevor McDonald, Thandie Newton, Baroness Scotland, musicians Jazzie B of Soul II Soul, Dizzie Rascal, Sir Lenny Henry, writer Gary Younge and many others talk about their parents as pioneers who came to the UK in search of a better life for them and their children. What they encountered was a whole raft of new experiences from snow to smoking chimneys - as well as prejudice, verbal abuse and physical violence. Actor David Harewood recounts attending his first football match at Leeds United as an eight-year-old, which ended with him leaving before the match had even begun with monkey chants and jeers ringing in his ears. The programme is a tribute to the dedication of immigrant parents who, with firm discipline, imparted important lessons about being twice as good, working hard and rising above racism. Their struggle was supposed to make it easier for the next generation to come to terms with their dual identity of being both black and British. Full description Black is the New Black

Is Britain Racist? (BBC 3 documentary)
Description: "Racism has never been more socially unacceptable in Britain - three quarters of Britons claim they have no racial prejudice whatsoever. Journalist Mona Chalabi investigates whether these statistics provide an accurate picture.
To find out what is happening on Britain's streets, three reporters are sent undercover to test the public's prejudice. The results are surprising.
The programme looks into people's unconscious behaviour, discovering what British people really think about their neighbours of different races and religions. And Mona puts her own beliefs under the microscope, discovering some uncomfortable truths.
Finally, she asks a hugely significant question - can people be trained to lose their prejudice?"

Liverpool (A Legacy of British Imperial Slave Trade)
Description: Liverpool is one of England’s most renowned cities, for periods during its history the wealth of Liverpool exceeded that of London itself, and its Custom House was the single largest contributor to the British Exchequer. Toady tourists marvel at the monumental buildings, constructed on a heroic, even megalomaniacal scale which stands witness to the supreme confidence and ambition of the city. But where did all this wealth come from and how did a small fishing city become known as "the New York of Europe"? To find the answer to this question this documentary delves into the dark pages of history: a time when Liverpool was at the centre of a global slave trade, a time when men and women were uprooted and sold for the profit of others.
