India's forgotten soldiers of World War I and II
Description: The Big Fight: They were brave, they were bold and they laid down their lives to stop the marauding German and Japanese forces. But they did so for the British Empire and that was the reason they have been relegated to the footnotes of history. Men of honour, but no one to commemorate their bravery and sacrifices - neither the Indians nor the British. More than a million Indian soldiers in World War I and more than two million in World War II fought for the empire. The question is whether the time has come to look back upon history and commemorate these Indians, if not for anything else then at least for their bravery, as they were caught on the wrong side of India's freedom movement. To know the answer, join us for a debate on The Big Fight.

The meanings of Black History in Britain and beyond
Description: There can be no single version of ‘black history’. Its meaning differs from person to person, from place to place and from era to era - depending on such factors as school curriculums, media clichés and stereotypes, access to historical evidence, collective traditions, patterns of mobility, and experiences of gender and class.
The Birmingham Research Institute for History and Cultures (BRIHC) presents a roundtable discussion to grapple with the meanings of 'black history' in Britain and beyond. Hear the perspectives of academics from the fields of British, African and American history.
Speakers included:
Norma Gregory (Nottingham News Centre)
Azeezat Johnson (Critical Race & Ethnicities Network)
Kadian Pow (Black Studies, Birmingham City University)
Keith Shear (African Studies, University of Birmingham)
Natalie Thomlinson (Modern British Cultural History, University of Sheffield)
